7 Fixes For Dry Skin To Keep Away Winter Blues!

Posted On: - 2010-02-19 04:29:06

Dry, itchy skin is a cause of concern among many women. Though it can happen any time of the year, dry skin is most common in the winter season. This is primely because of the low temperatures, low humidity and chilly winds that serve to deplete skin of its natural lipid layer and makes it dry and lifeless.

However, with proper skin care you can keep your skin moisturized and prevent it from drying out:

1. Use Lukewarm Water Instead of Hot Water
Hot water strips off moisture from the skin leaving it dry and lifeless. So, make sure you bath in lukewarm water. Also keep your showers short in the winter season. Hot temperature of water combined with drying chemicals of soaps can irritate the skin and make it overtly dry.

2. Moisturize Immediately after getting out of Shower
Moisturizers have maximum effectiveness when applied to damp skin. This is why it is advised to moisturize your skin immediately after you get out of the shower, when your skin is slightly damp... not dripping wet. Also, make sure you gently pat your skin dry instead of rubbing hard with a towel.

Use NIA 24 Intensive Recovery Complex, a rich cream that moisturizes the skin intensely and helps activate its regenerative powers. The skin becomes firmer and toned because of the active ingredients like ceramides, liposomes and peptides within it. It locks in the multi-level moisture and minimizes transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

3. Exfoliate Regularly
Exfoliation is a key process in a skin care regimen. Also, moisturizers are the most effective on properly exfoliated skin. Therefore, use an exfoliating scrub once or twice a week that helps to scrape off the dead skin cells and flakes from your skin surface.

Try Skin Care Heaven Anti-Aging Exfoliating Scrub. It gently removes dead skin cells and excess oil by delivering a soothing wave of heat, leaving the skin soft with a youthful glow.

4. Get a Humidifier
The moisture in the air plays is what determines the hydration levels of your skin. During winters, the humidity in the air is extremely low and this wrecks havoc on the skin. Also, it is a known fact that skin needs more than 30 percent humidity to stay sufficiently moisturized. Therefore, it is a good idea to get a humidifier.

5. Use Moisturizing Soaps
Soaps often contain harsh chemicals that can be cause drying effects on the skin. Therefore, switch to a creamy moisturizing cleanser or moisturizing soaps during winter. Look out for ingredients like glycerin or petrolatum.

6. Drinking More Water will not Help
Drinking water is a great way to stay hydrated but going overboard with it is not a good idea. Drinking more water doesn't necessarily hydrate the skin. Though you should continue drinking enough water, it is also important that you use a quality moisturizer to hydrate your skin from outside.

7. Moisturize your Lips as well
One of the common winter problems in winter is that of dry and chapped lips. Also, many women have the habit of licking their lips to keep them moist. However, licking lips will only help to dry them out further. Lips retain less moisture than other parts of the body, so they tend to dry out more quickly. Therefore, make sure you use a moisturizing lip balm in the winter season that help prevent your lips from drying out.
