Does Acneic Skin Need Moisturizers?

Posted for Acne On May 26, 2009

The answer is a resounding Yes!

A very common misconception among women is that acne prone skin does not require moisturizers. This is because acne is supposed to be a consequence of oily skin and moisturizers are further thought of as something that aggravates the oiliness of the skin.

However, what most people fail to realize is that there is difference between moisture and oil. Moisturizers are hydrating substances that cover the tiny fissures of the skin and provide a soothing protective film. In fact, moisturizers slow the evaporation of the skin’s moisture and thus keep up the hydration levels.

Moisturizers are not your enemy. Rather they can be very good friends when you know what to use on acne prone skin. It’s all about getting the right moisturizer. Here are some tips to choose a moisturizer for acne prone skin.

The moisturizer should be oil-free and especially formulated for acne prone skin. It should be lightweight and preferably gel based. This makes sure that it is gentle on the skin and doesn’t add on to the oiliness of the skin.

It should contain ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid that treat acne, lessen acne sores and improve the skin quality.

Most importantly, the moisturizer should be anti-acneic and should not further irritate your acne.

Here is a great choice:

There is a popular misconception among people that higher the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of a sunscreen, the better it will be able to protect against sunlight. While this may be true in theory, practically it is not possible. There have been several studies that have proven that sunscreens with SPF 50+ are just as effective as a sunscreen with an SPF 30.

What is SPF?

SPF or Sun Protection Factor is a formula to measure a sunscreens\’ ability to protect the skin from damage by UV radiation from the sun. If your skin burns after 20 minutes under the sun, a sunscreen with SPF 15 will protect your skin for 15 times longer. Thus, you can stay in the sun for 300 minutes without getting damaged.

UVB Protection
Sunscreens with SPF 15 and above generally provide superior protection against UVB radiation of from sun. Generally, SPF 15 filters out 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 filters 97% and SPF 50 filters 98% of UVB radiation.

UVA Protection
Not all sunscreens that protect against UVB rays, protect against UVA rays. Therefore, it is important to check if the sunscreen has UVA protective ingredients like avobenzone, oxybenzone, mexoryl, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

The efficiency of sunscreens depends on how you use the product more than their SPF. Here are some tips to apply sunscreen so you can extract the maximum benefits.

  • Apply a thick coat of sunscreen so that you are well protected against the harsh UV radiations of the sunlight.

SPF or ‘Sun Protection Factor’ is a determining measure of the ability of a sunscreen to prevent sun damage. There is a widespread misconception that the higher the SPF of a sunscreen, the better the protection it offers. However, that’s not the case.

What Is SPF?
SPF is the ability of the sunscreen to protect against harsh sun rays before any damage is caused to the skin. If you can remain in the sunlight without getting burnt for about 30 minutes, then an SPF 15 product will increase the time you can spend in the sun 15 times more. That is, you can safely stay out in the sun for 30 X 15= 450 minutes. That is more than 7 hours. Now let’s talk about the 2 different Rays the sun emits.

UVB Rays
Sunscreens protect the skin against the harmful UVB rays of the sun. The UVB rays penetrate the skin surface and cause intrinsic damage. As a result, the skin begins to sag and deteriorate.

UVA Rays
Most sunscreen offer protection against UVB rays. Only some protect against UVA rays as well. Look for UVA-protective ingredients such as avobenzone, oxybenzone, mexoryl, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. This ensures broad-spectrum protection.

  • Make sure you apply the sunscreen all over your face, behind ears, on the neck, hands, arms and decolletage.
  • Always apply sunscreen about 15-30 minutes before venturing out in the sun.
  • Make sure you re-apply the sunscreen after every two to three hours, especially so if you have done any activities that can wash it off like swimming, exercising.

So go ahead! have fun in the sun… with the sunscreen and other skin care products!

Why Do You Need To Toss Skin Care Products Regularly?

Posted for Skin Care On May 7, 2009

Here are some reasons why skin care products are best thrown away after a while

Shelf Life of Active Ingredients

Skin care products contain a variety of active ingredients that help relieve specific skin conditions and enhance overall quality of the skin. However, these ingredients have a definite shelf life after which they tend to degrade and lose potency. In fact, ingredients like Vitamin C can be so unstable that they get oxidized upon contact with air or sunlight. This makes the skin care product lose efficiency and hence not show any results.

Skin care products need to be stored well in order to extend their shelf life. However, often people handle skin care products carelessly that they get contaminated as a result of poor usage. Thus the product becomes ineffective and even tends to damage the skin in some cases.

Ineffective Preservatives and Stabilizers
Skin care products contain certain preservatives and stabilizers in order to prolong their shelf lives and prevent bacterial infestation. However, sometimes these added preservative and stabilizers are so ineffective that they take toll on the active ingredients of the product thus making them useless.

Accumulation of Occlusive Ingredients
Ingredients like silicones and mineral oil create a barrier and clog the skin pores. Though skin care products contain only a small percentage of such ingredients, their regular use may accumulate and further hamper the skin quality.

So, there are many reasons why you should keep trying out new skin care products. Even if you are not convinced you can always be game to experiment!
