Caring for Oily Skin

Posted for AcneAnti AgingBeautyOily SkinSkin CareSkin Cleansers & Toners On February 10, 2012

It glistens and it shines… It’s as greasy as its glossy!

Yeah… I am talking about oily skin. Those who have it know it what goes into its care. It’s a losing battle against shine and grease on the face!

So let me tell you some intricacies about oily skin and how to set it right!

Overactive sebaceous glands! They are responsible for the increased production of sebum that further leads to oiliness of the skin. When sebaceous glands secrete more than normal amounts of oil, the skin pores stretch out and darken which then are called blackheads.

Other deciding factors of oily skin are genetic make up, hormonal changes during adolescence, medications and use of certain unsuitable skin care products. Well… genetics and hormones are something you cannot do much about, but there are many other things that you can do at your end to ensure undue oiliness doesn’t reside on your skin.

Here are some tips that you should keep in mind:

• Use skin care products that are specially formulated for your particular skin type

• Cleanse your face every morning and night so as to remove any dirt, impurities and make up residues. Do not cleanse more than twice a day as it will give way to skin dryness. Use mild water based cleansers that cleans the face but don’t irritate the skin. Avoid using cream based cleansers.

• Wear a sunscreen with high SPF content of 30 or more throughout the day. Apply it at least 15-20 minutes before venturing out and reapply as and when required.

• Follow an effective skin care regimen on daily basis and nourish your skin well.

The Shelf Life of Skin Care Products

Posted for AcneAnti AgingBeautyEye Care & Eye Make UPLip CareMoisturizersOily SkinSkin CareSkin Cleansers & Toners On January 23, 2012

Skin care products don’t have an expiration date. So, this makes things a bit tricky in figuring out when to toss out skin care products before they go bad.

As chief officer of an online skin care product store, a producer of my own product line, and operation of a new day spa, it’s important to understand the potency of a product and when it’s time to pitch it. Our health always comes first.

To keep track, some suggest writing a date on the packaging but so many of us forget to recheck it. Instead, a better way is to use your computer or cell phone calendar with “alarm” reminders for a 3, 6, 9 and 12 month checkup to see if it’s product trashcan time.

While many think their products may last up to two years that really may not be the case on all types of skin care and beauty products.

For example, if a cream or lotion product has turned thin or lumpy, chuck it. Other signs to watch out for are:

  • Changes in smell
  • Has a different feeling on the skin when applied
  • Turned darker in color
  • Product divided itself into visible layers

And anti aging products which contain antioxidants, retinol, and vitamins are always at a higher risk for a sooner expiration date. So be sure lids are replaced tightly.

To keep bacterial contamination from happening, keep your fingers out of those containers. When bacteria gets in there, the product is ruined and there’s no turning back. A perfectly new skin care product can go bad instantly once bacteria invades it.

Other helpful tips are:

  • Store your products in a cool place such as a cabinet.
  • If your new product has a broken seal return it immediately.
  • Keep your products away from the sunlight.
  • Always wash your hands before using skin care products.
  • If an infection or rash is brought on by a product throw it out.
  • Do not add water to a formula.

Because there are no regulations and expiration dates, it’s really up to you to figure out when it’s time to part with your products. At first, it may feel like you are throwing away money, but in the end, you are saving your body from the threat of bacterial contamination. And no one wants to risk that.

Remember, these products only last so long once that lid is officially unscrewed.

Although moisturizers, serums, and creams tend to last 6 months to a year, some product ingredients can speed up the expiration date such as:

  • Plant Extracts: known for its wonderful skin care properties, plant extracts have a shorter shelf life.
  • Preservative-Free Ingredients: while many enjoy the thought of not putting preservatives on their bodies, do keep an eye out for changes since preservatives help fight off bacteria.
  • Water: if this is the first or second item on the list of ingredients it has more of a chance to promote bacteria.
  • Wax: this ingredient may also offer a shorter expiration date especially if it has little water in its formula.

It’s important to point out that if you stick with your skin care routine and are mindful of bacterial contamination, chances are you’ll use up your product before it expires.

Tips to Avoid Summer Acne

Posted for AcneSkin Care On July 7, 2011

We look forward to summertime, but what many of us don’t want with it is summer acne breakouts. But with a slight change in a skincare routine, we can fight off acne before it even starts.
There’s no doubt about it — summer is an acne issue. With summer, comes sweating and that’s what flares up acne. And if you’re participating in outdoor sports perspiration needs to be conquered quickly since it triggers sebaceous gland production which produces oil.
Oily skin is the main reason for acne breakouts.
Trouble spots normally occur in the following areas:
• Forehead
• Nose
• Chest
• Back
There is also a direct correlation between larger pores and where acne surfaces.
Wash your face with a mild cleanser both morning and night. This can help reduce oily skin. If facial oil begins to peak during the midday hours, go ahead and do an additional afternoon wash.
A top skin cleansing system is the five-step system, Dermalogica Clean Start Kit. It eliminates breakouts while keeping the skin hydrated. It’s an ideal combination.
A number of skin care professionals also recommend a clay mask which has the ability to absorb oil.
Because summertime promotes oil production, it might also be the right time for you to scale back on moisturizers. Test the right amount to find the right balance for you.
Here are some other helpful hints to add onto your list:
• Implement a nighttime skin care regimen which includes complete makeup removal
• Use a mild cleanser and/or non-soap cleanser
• Purchase cosmetics which are not oil-based and lean more towards mineral and/or water-based makeup
Remember to use sunscreen when you’re outdoors and find sunscreen that’s oil-free.
Finding the right skincare routine to ward off summer acne isn’t too difficult and teaming up with a skin care professional will make the road much easier.

How To Treat Acne Breakouts?

Posted for Acne On August 13, 2009

Hi,

Is there anything more disastrous than waking up in then morning and finding an ugly pimple on your face? The beauty of your face is completely spoiled by the tiny ugly speck. And you cannot even pop it because you may be scarred for life.

Acne and breakouts are a common problem no matter what skin type you have. All of us have encountered acne at some time in life. And if you are not careful in treating breakouts, it could result in scarring, slower recovery time, pigmentation problems and even more breakouts.

Here are some tips to deal with breakouts in a correct way so that you don\’t end up harming your skin.

Never Pop a Pimple
I know how tempting it is and how difficult it is to keep your hands from picking on the pimple. However, just remember that when you pick a pimple, you can end up spreading the bacteria in the surrounding cells and cause inflammations. This can aggravate the situation and slow down the healing process of breakouts.

Treat Early
Once a pimple is fully developed, there is nothing much you can do about it. So, just when you feel a breakout is about to happen or if you spot it at an early stage, start the treatment! You may feel it under your skin or notice the area has become red and itchy. Apply an acne spot treatment that\’ll keep the skin nice and clean. Look for once containing salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or tretinoin.

Apply it Correctly
Wash your hands well and just dab a bit of spot treatment to the pimple. Avoid touching it more than you have to.

Avoid Heavy Concealers
Women often tend to hide pimples with a heavy concealer. But it would have severe consequences as well. The heavy concealer can trap the oil and debris within the pore and aggravate the situation.

So, the next time you spot a pimple, don\’t panic. Rather, get started with the treatment there and then and be sure that it’s only a short while before the pimple is gone!

How To Choose An Acne Treatment?

Posted for Acne On July 2, 2009

Hi,

Water water everywhere… But not a drop to drink! Do you get the same feeling as you browse through the acne skin care section of your drugstore?

There are so many acne products flooding the skin care market that more often than not, people get confused about what to purchase. Even a search on the Internet turns out such overwhelming results that it only adds to the confusion. Fortunately, the right kind of knowledge can make things easier for you and help to decide on the right product…

In order to choose an effective acne treatment, we first need to understand the prime causes of acne.

Causes of Acne
Acne can be a result of a number of reasons including genetics, hormonal alterations, medications, stress and most importantly bacterial infestation. Acne is formed when bacteria, dead skin cells and sebum particles get clogged inside the skin pores. It further gives rise to the formation of whiteheads and blackheads

Choosing Acne Care Products

It is not enough to use acne care products. Rather you should make sure that all the other skin care products that you use help to keep acne at bay. Here are some handy tips…

Cleansers
Should be mild and remove the skin impurities without making it too dry. Dry and irritated skin is more prone to breakouts. Look for \’anti-acneic\’ labels!

Toners
Acne prone skin is usually oil. So consider using toners containing witch hazel.

Moisturizers
Use lightweight oil-free moisturizers preferably in form of serums and gels. Avoid creamy ones.

Spot Treatments

Look for products containing ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. They are powerful acne fighting ingredients and can provide great improvement in acne. Also look for tretinoin, again a powerful anti-acneic ingredient.

So, the next time you go to purchase your skin care products, you won\’t be confused anymore and can make a wise decision.

Does Acneic Skin Need Moisturizers?

Posted for Acne On May 26, 2009

Hi,

The answer is a resounding Yes!

A very common misconception among women is that acne prone skin does not require moisturizers. This is because acne is supposed to be a consequence of oily skin and moisturizers are further thought of as something that aggravates the oiliness of the skin.

However, what most people fail to realize is that there is difference between moisture and oil. Moisturizers are hydrating substances that cover the tiny fissures of the skin and provide a soothing protective film. In fact, moisturizers slow the evaporation of the skin’s moisture and thus keep up the hydration levels.

Moisturizers are not your enemy. Rather they can be very good friends when you know what to use on acne prone skin. It’s all about getting the right moisturizer. Here are some tips to choose a moisturizer for acne prone skin.

The moisturizer should be oil-free and especially formulated for acne prone skin. It should be lightweight and preferably gel based. This makes sure that it is gentle on the skin and doesn’t add on to the oiliness of the skin.

It should contain ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid that treat acne, lessen acne sores and improve the skin quality.

Most importantly, the moisturizer should be anti-acneic and should not further irritate your acne.

Here is a great choice:

iS Clinical Hydra Cool Serum: It is a hydrating, soothing and anti-acneic moisturizer.
