The Shelf Life of Skin Care Products

Posted for AcneAnti AgingBeautyEye Care & Eye Make UPLip CareMoisturizersOily SkinSkin CareSkin Cleansers & Toners On January 23, 2012

Skin care products don’t have an expiration date. So, this makes things a bit tricky in figuring out when to toss out skin care products before they go bad.

As chief officer of an online skin care product store, a producer of my own product line, and operation of a new day spa, it’s important to understand the potency of a product and when it’s time to pitch it. Our health always comes first.

To keep track, some suggest writing a date on the packaging but so many of us forget to recheck it. Instead, a better way is to use your computer or cell phone calendar with “alarm” reminders for a 3, 6, 9 and 12 month checkup to see if it’s product trashcan time.

While many think their products may last up to two years that really may not be the case on all types of skin care and beauty products.

For example, if a cream or lotion product has turned thin or lumpy, chuck it. Other signs to watch out for are:

  • Changes in smell
  • Has a different feeling on the skin when applied
  • Turned darker in color
  • Product divided itself into visible layers

And anti aging products which contain antioxidants, retinol, and vitamins are always at a higher risk for a sooner expiration date. So be sure lids are replaced tightly.

To keep bacterial contamination from happening, keep your fingers out of those containers. When bacteria gets in there, the product is ruined and there’s no turning back. A perfectly new skin care product can go bad instantly once bacteria invades it.

Other helpful tips are:

  • Store your products in a cool place such as a cabinet.
  • If your new product has a broken seal return it immediately.
  • Keep your products away from the sunlight.
  • Always wash your hands before using skin care products.
  • If an infection or rash is brought on by a product throw it out.
  • Do not add water to a formula.

Because there are no regulations and expiration dates, it’s really up to you to figure out when it’s time to part with your products. At first, it may feel like you are throwing away money, but in the end, you are saving your body from the threat of bacterial contamination. And no one wants to risk that.

Remember, these products only last so long once that lid is officially unscrewed.

Although moisturizers, serums, and creams tend to last 6 months to a year, some product ingredients can speed up the expiration date such as:

  • Plant Extracts: known for its wonderful skin care properties, plant extracts have a shorter shelf life.
  • Preservative-Free Ingredients: while many enjoy the thought of not putting preservatives on their bodies, do keep an eye out for changes since preservatives help fight off bacteria.
  • Water: if this is the first or second item on the list of ingredients it has more of a chance to promote bacteria.
  • Wax: this ingredient may also offer a shorter expiration date especially if it has little water in its formula.

It’s important to point out that if you stick with your skin care routine and are mindful of bacterial contamination, chances are you’ll use up your product before it expires.

Tips For Healthy Lips

Tips for healthy lips
By Steven Stern

While so many individuals are mindful of their overall anti-aging skin care regimen, they often disregard the need for lip care. Like the rest of the face, lips have a strong tendency to highlight unmistakable signs of aging.
A good lip regimen promotes the following for lips:
• Healthy skin
• Chap-free
• Soft and plump
Lips do not have sebaceous glands which mean they are continually susceptible to dryness.
While there are several reasons behind lip structure negative changes there are some at the top of the list which include:
• Aging
• Smoking
• Sun exposure
The best anti-aging defense is to purchase a lip product which offers a Sun Protection Factor (SPF). An example of this is the Jane Iredale Lip Drink . Using a SPF product is especially helpful if one spends their work or playtime outdoors.
Research has revealed that sun exposure is one reason for lip cancer. Using a SPF balm coupled with a wide-brim hat can help fight off powerful, harmful rays. It has also been discovered that smoking can increase a person’s risk of lip cancer, as well.
Smoking has a tendency to dry out the lips and drain their color due to a drop in oxygen supply.
When searching for ingredients in a lip product, do remember that seeking conditioning properties is highly recommended and encouraged. Here are some important formulas to jot down:
• Green Tea
• Zinc Oxide
• Vitamin C and E
• Macadamia Nut Oil
• Beeswax
• Lemon Peel Oil
• Shea Butter
• Sunflower Seed Oil
• Avocado Oil
• Carnauba Wax
Some SPF products, like Kinerase Ultimate Volume Lip Conditioner also offer anti-aging plumping properties. Ingredients in these types of conditioners may include Dehydrasomes, Volulip and Kinetin – the combination of the three help promote collagen production.
Following these easy steps will encourage a youthful lip change in a few weeks. And for some, even a shorter time than that.

Are Chapped Lips Disrupting your Beauty?

Posted for Lip Care On June 22, 2010

Hi,

Nothing ruins your look more than dry, chapped lips. In fact, chapped lips can shake your confidence when you want to snuggle up to that special someone

What Causes Chapped Lips?

Excessive Exfoliation
While it is a good thing to gently exfoliate your lips with a toothbrush to remove the layer of dead skin cells, it can be harmful if are too agressive. Excessive exfoliation actually breaks down the protective skin barrier that locks in the moisture and makes your lips drier and flakier.

Inefficient Lip Balms
You may be applying lip balm only to realize your lips are just as chapped and flaky as they were when you started. Wax-based lip balms provide only marginal protection. You need to opt for a long-stay petroleum based balm or reapply it couple of times a day.

Use of Drying Ingredients

Wrong lip care products can do more harm than good. If you are using lip products with drying ingredients, your lips will only become drier and more chapped.. For example, cinnamates, a popular ingredient in lip plumpers can cause irritation. Instead opt for a lip gloss. The shine will make your lips appear fuller.

Constant Licking
When our lips feel dry, most of us don’t think twice before licking or even biting off the flaking skin. However, this only makes the more dry. Saliva contains enzymes that break down your skin and create cracks. So try to resist this habit and instead drink plenty of water to keep your lips hydrated.

Use a moisturizing lip balm, preferably one enriched with rich antioxidants and moisturizing ingredients. Make sure it contains SPF to protect against sun damage. Lips contain less melanin which make them more susceptible to sun damage.

Product Picks:

Kinerase Ultimate Volume Lip Conditioner with SPF 20
It is a superior lip care formula that visibly plumps, protects and repairs the signs of aging. It leaves your lips noticeably smooth, full, glossy and youthful.

Glo Gloss
Available in a rich color palette, it is an amazing moisturizing lip gloss for women. Enriched with superior antioxidants like Vitamin A, C, E and Green Tea, it nourishes your lips and makes them appear fuller and plumper.

Lip Care An Integral Part Of Skin Care

Posted for Lip Care On November 10, 2009

Hi,

As much as I have seen women paying great attention to their skin care, I have also noticed that many women forget about lip care completely. Applying lipstick or a lip balm or gloss is all that is done.

Lip care is a very integral part of your beauty regimen. Without healthy and good looking lips, even your flawless skin may just fail to create the look you are trying to achieve. The skin on your lips is extremely sensitive and tender and this is why it is highly susceptible to damage by external factors.

The skin of your lips is comprised of three to five cellular layers and is very delicate. Another interesting fact is that lips don\’t have sebaceous glands, therefore they dry out faster and get chapped easily.

Here are some tips to take good care of your lips.

Drink lots of Water
Since the lips do not contain sebaceous glands, it cannot produce sebum to keep them hydrated. As a result, they dry out very easily and are prone to the development of wrinkles. Therefore, make sure you drink sufficient amount of water and keep the skin hydrated. Also, cut down on beverages like coffee and tea. You can even take vitamin E supplements orally.

Quit Smoking
Smoking dries up your lips and also reduces the oxygen supply to the lip skin that provides essential nutrients to the blood cells. Without ample blood flow to the tissues, the lips lose color and become dark and dull.

Exfoliate Regularly
Make sure you use a good lip exfoliating product and scrape off dead skin cells from the surface of the lips. After you are done with the exfoliation process, make sure you slather lip balm on your lips.

Use an SPF-inclusive Lip Balm
When you venture out in the sun, make sure you apply a lip balm that has SPF contents that can protect your lips against the UV rays of the sun.

Spend some time taking care of your lips. Then you can flaunt a supple pout and make heads turn!

So Do Take Good Care Of Your Lips!

Luscious Lips Need Good Care

Posted for Lip Care On November 24, 2008

Hi,

Lips are perhaps the most alluring feature on your face. And just as it’s important to keep your facial skin healthy and glowing, it is also essential to keep your lips supple!

The skin on your lips requires just as much nourishment and care that you bestow on your face. Your lips are just as prone to damage by environmental, physical and ultraviolet radiation. However, it can be one of the areas most neglected by women.

Soft and Supple
The skin on the lips is the thinnest and most sensitive on the entire body and they are susceptible to damage by environamental factors. The lips are smooth and supple even though there are no oil glands or protective covering. This also makes it more prone to dryness and flakiness. The Loss of moisture also subsequently results in chapping and cracking along the corners of the lips.

It is extremely important to keep your lips moisturized at all times. Use a good quality moisturizing lipstick or lip gloss as a protective shield on the lips.

Scrub for the Lips
Just like facial scrubs exfoliate the dead skin cells on the face, lips need to shed off dead skin too. It gets rid of the chapped skin on the lips and stimulates blood circulation. But the exfoliation process of the lips doesn’t have to be as stringent. Considering the fact that skin on the lips is more fragile and thin, use something especially formulated for the lips.

Lip Wrinkles
Lips often exhibit tiny clusters of wrinkles on them. They are especially prominent on smokers because of their constant puckering. These fine lines can be treated with an effective antioxidant treatment.

Also, don’t drink out of straws! It has the same effect because fo the puckering to sip from them.

Moisturize
Lip care is incomplete without moisturization. Apply ample amounts of lip balms to soothe the dry areas and hydrated them again.
