Caring for Oily Skin

It glistens and it shines… It’s as greasy as its glossy!

Yeah… I am talking about oily skin. Those who have it know it what goes into its care. It’s a losing battle against shine and grease on the face!

So let me tell you some intricacies about oily skin and how to set it right!

Overactive sebaceous glands! They are responsible for the increased production of sebum that further leads to oiliness of the skin. When sebaceous glands secrete more than normal amounts of oil, the skin pores stretch out and darken which then are called blackheads.

Other deciding factors of oily skin are genetic make up, hormonal changes during adolescence, medications and use of certain unsuitable skin care products. Well… genetics and hormones are something you cannot do much about, but there are many other things that you can do at your end to ensure undue oiliness doesn’t reside on your skin.

Here are some tips that you should keep in mind:

• Use skin care products that are specially formulated for your particular skin type

• Cleanse your face every morning and night so as to remove any dirt, impurities and make up residues. Do not cleanse more than twice a day as it will give way to skin dryness. Use mild water based cleansers that cleans the face but don’t irritate the skin. Avoid using cream based cleansers.

• Wear a sunscreen with high SPF content of 30 or more throughout the day. Apply it at least 15-20 minutes before venturing out and reapply as and when required.

• Follow an effective skin care regimen on daily basis and nourish your skin well.

Sunscreen Isn’t Just For Summer

Posted for Anti AgingBeautyEye Care & Eye Make UPMoisturizersOily SkinSkin CareSun Tanning On January 23, 2012

Sunscreen just isn’t for hot summer days.  It’s something that should be applied every single day of the year. Although it may be deceiving, about 80 percent of ultra violet rays still seep its way through overcast skies damaging skin and causing premature aging.

Anytime someone is outdoors they are at risk for sun damage.  And yes, that includes playing sports, gardening, or even just walking the dog.  Don’t forget that the reflection of snow and sand also boosts the exposure to UV rays.

In addition to premature aging, reports estimate that skin cancer is still a disease to contend with for both men and women. That’s why sunscreen is so important.

Skin Care Heaven, an e-commerce store in Carlsbad offers an array of quality solar defense inventory.

Here are some valuable tips into different ways of shielding your skin to keep it healthy and young looking.

SUNSCREEN 101

Sun protection can be found in organic and non-organic formulas. On the shelves they come in gels, sprays, lotions, creams, sticks, and powder forms. The most important one to buy is a product that offers a broad spectrum which simply means it protects the user from UVA and UVB rays.

Those who love using organic products will more than likely find the following ingredients:

  • Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate
  • Ethylhexyl Salicylate
  • Homosalate
  • Octocrylene
  • Titanium Dioxide 2.0%

For the most part, organic sunscreens are paraben and fragrance free.  But check the labels to make sure.  Because UVA and UVB sunscreen offer the best protection out there, double check that the vegetarian ingredients in the bottle offer it, as well.

Non-organic sunscreen manufacturers not only offer sun protection but their ingredients may also include anti-aging and skin recovery ingredients like Dermalogica Age Smart Dynamic Skin Recovery does. And these days, sunscreens are non-greasy, absorb quickly and are featherweight. Even those with acne prone skin can find the perfect product that meet their skin care needs.

Important ingredients to look for in these products are:

  • Ecamsule
  • Avobenzone
  • Oxybenzone
  • Sulisobenzone
  • Titanium dioxide
  • Zinc oxide

Last but not least, tinted moisturizers like Revision Skin Care have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 45. Avid users of tinted moisturizers love the light, natural coverage and oftentimes use it instead of a heavier foundation.

Healthcare professionals recommend using a sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher and to consider a waterproof one, too.

APPLICATION TIPS

The best time to apply sunscreen is 15 to 30 minutes before going outside.  And please don’t be stingy with it. The rule of thumb is a “shot-size” glass serving or more for an adult body.  Research has shown that not enough people use sunscreen and remain unprotected.

Don’t let the “long-lasting” words on the bottle think sunscreen is only applied once a day.  A solar defense needs to be reapplied every two to three hours when outdoors.  And if the product is not waterproof, it must be reapplied after sweating or following a swim.

The most common places people forget to apply sunscreen are:

  • Ears
  • Back of legs
  • Feet
  • Top of hands
  • Scalp (if there is a receding hairline or one wears a buzz cut)

While sunscreen is one surefire way to keep skin looking youthful and healthy, add in some other skin saving tools like a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and retreat to shady areas whenever possible.

The Shelf Life of Skin Care Products

Posted for AcneAnti AgingBeautyEye Care & Eye Make UPLip CareMoisturizersOily SkinSkin CareSkin Cleansers & Toners On January 23, 2012

Skin care products don’t have an expiration date. So, this makes things a bit tricky in figuring out when to toss out skin care products before they go bad.

As chief officer of an online skin care product store, a producer of my own product line, and operation of a new day spa, it’s important to understand the potency of a product and when it’s time to pitch it. Our health always comes first.

To keep track, some suggest writing a date on the packaging but so many of us forget to recheck it. Instead, a better way is to use your computer or cell phone calendar with “alarm” reminders for a 3, 6, 9 and 12 month checkup to see if it’s product trashcan time.

While many think their products may last up to two years that really may not be the case on all types of skin care and beauty products.

For example, if a cream or lotion product has turned thin or lumpy, chuck it. Other signs to watch out for are:

  • Changes in smell
  • Has a different feeling on the skin when applied
  • Turned darker in color
  • Product divided itself into visible layers

And anti aging products which contain antioxidants, retinol, and vitamins are always at a higher risk for a sooner expiration date. So be sure lids are replaced tightly.

To keep bacterial contamination from happening, keep your fingers out of those containers. When bacteria gets in there, the product is ruined and there’s no turning back. A perfectly new skin care product can go bad instantly once bacteria invades it.

Other helpful tips are:

  • Store your products in a cool place such as a cabinet.
  • If your new product has a broken seal return it immediately.
  • Keep your products away from the sunlight.
  • Always wash your hands before using skin care products.
  • If an infection or rash is brought on by a product throw it out.
  • Do not add water to a formula.

Because there are no regulations and expiration dates, it’s really up to you to figure out when it’s time to part with your products. At first, it may feel like you are throwing away money, but in the end, you are saving your body from the threat of bacterial contamination. And no one wants to risk that.

Remember, these products only last so long once that lid is officially unscrewed.

Although moisturizers, serums, and creams tend to last 6 months to a year, some product ingredients can speed up the expiration date such as:

  • Plant Extracts: known for its wonderful skin care properties, plant extracts have a shorter shelf life.
  • Preservative-Free Ingredients: while many enjoy the thought of not putting preservatives on their bodies, do keep an eye out for changes since preservatives help fight off bacteria.
  • Water: if this is the first or second item on the list of ingredients it has more of a chance to promote bacteria.
  • Wax: this ingredient may also offer a shorter expiration date especially if it has little water in its formula.

It’s important to point out that if you stick with your skin care routine and are mindful of bacterial contamination, chances are you’ll use up your product before it expires.

Tips To Treat Oily Skin

Posted for Anti AgingOily SkinSkin Care On September 10, 2011

Dealing with oily skin doesn’t have to be a daily battle. Yes, it’s a hassle to see oil reappear only a few hours after you wash your face, but do realize that there are some great products and tips out there to help make living with oily skin easier than ever.

You’ll notice soon enough that some simple twists to a beauty routine can help reduce oil buildup.

Normal oil production offers hydrating properties to help keep skin wrinkle-free. But too much of it, as we all know, can cause acne.

So, the first step to battle oily skin is to choose the right cleanser. If possible, try and wash your face at least twice a day.

One type of emerging cleanser that is a favorite for oily skin contains botanical extracts. Skin care professionals actually like how it decreases oil production without drying out the skin. It really is the best of both worlds.

Dermalogica Clean Start Wash Off not only has these botanical extracts, but it clears oil deep within the pores which cause acne breakouts. This Dermalogica skin care product also has salicylic acid which helps decrease acne. Its licorice extract calms the skin and reduces potential inflammation or irritation oily skin can bring.

While the goal for a cleanser is to remove oil, please be sure you don’t totally dry out your skin.

Next, is finding the right toner. A toner is an important part of your skin care system because it balances your skin’s pH after a wash and soaks up excess oil, too.

Many toner users really like Obagi Nu-Derm Toner. This Obagi line contains a blend of natural ingredients and herbs. The toner also penetrates really well into the skin.

It’s important to point out that toners come in a variety of different names such as:
• Astringent
• Balancer
• Clarifying lotion
• Cleansing water
• Toning lotion

Whatever name it goes by, it does offer daily skin benefits that you should never forget in your regimen.

If it’s impossible to wash your face more than twice a day then blotting paper might be a good choice.

We all know how hectic the work week is and just the mere thought of washing your face and reapplying makeup right around noontime can be an overwhelming thought for sure. So, that’s where the blotting paper comes in. Its goal is to get rid of oil and leave the skin shine-free.

Blotting paper can be found in the following types of materials:
• Linen
• Organic flax seed
• Rice paper

One blotting paper that’s really growing in popularity is the Jane Iredale Facial Blotting Papers and Compact. Made from organic flaxseed, this little gem is small and discreet. It comes in an attractive compact, but most of all, it’s highly absorbent and created for frequent use. Professionals agree that organic flaxseed is more porous than rice or linen blotting paper.

It’s also interesting to note that it’s not only people with oily skin using this Jane Iredale product. People with normal and combination skin like it, too. They find it refreshing to use during any time of the day.

If you have oily skin, please don’t shy away from moisturizers and sunscreen. They are so important to have in your beauty and skin care routine.
Skin care science has come a long way. Now, they offer these two products in oil-free formulas. For example, some oil-free moisturizers have revolutionary ingredients.

One that comes to mind is Skin Care Heaven Anti-oxidant Oil-Free Moisturizer. Its green tea formula provides amazing antioxidant anti-aging qualities which repairs, restores and protects the skin from past and future environmental hazards like the sun. Other nourishing ingredients are Vitamins A, C and E which minimize sun damage while improving overall skin texture.

If you’re not quite convinced that a moisturizer is for you than consider a serum. A serum is lighter and can offer age-defying benefits, too.

As far as sunscreens go, they have oil-free products which glide on like silk. A preferred one out there is made by La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid. It’s sheer, which makes it perfect for under makeup wear. This broad spectrum sunscreen is also non-comedogenic and is fragrance-free.

But one of the best things about this La Roche-Posay line is its leaf extract, Senna Alta, which wards off skin damage.

It’s important to remember if you have oily skin, you can still use products which deliver a potent dose of nourishing ingredients which offer a luminous appearance.
